Music has a way of inspiring a certain nostalgia, and there are certain songs that will always bring me back to a point in time or place in my life. Music has the power to make me dance around the room and bring me to tears in one instant. There are certain songs and artists that I always come back to when traveling. A few notes of ‘Papa Americano’ and I’m back dancing on the river in Vang Vieng, Laos, whisky bucket in hand. Music can make long bus rides and flights bearable, bring people together, and overall just enhance the entire experience of traveling. Anyways, here are some of my favorite artists to listen to while traveling.
Frank Turner is my absolute favorite artist to while traveling solo. Some of my favorite songs include ‘Wanderlust’, ‘The Road’ and ‘I am Disappeared.’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfT0b2INxO4
I face the horizon everywhere I go. I face the horizon, the horizon is my home.
Some of Lord Huron’s songs still remind me of being on buses in Southeast Asia, watching the landscape blur by. You know those songs that make you feel absolutely infinite? This is one of them.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Okay, so who doesn’t like Tom Petty? No matter where I am, these songs always have a way of inspiring me and making me want to go somewhere new.
This is one of those bands that never fails to get me pumped up and excited. The best way to listen to Hüsker Dü is loudly and without abandon.
Of Monsters and Men
I love this band. At my guesthouse in Myanmar, the woman running it kept requesting I play ‘Dirty Paws’ again and again on my iPod after I had plugged it in to the speakers.
I think that the Replacements are one of the most under appreciated bands of all time. Paul Westerberg’s lyrics are truly timeless.
I love Ben Lee, especially his fifth album, ‘Awake is the New Sleep.’
Awake is new sleep. So wake up, and do it- whatever it is.
Billy Bragg and Wilco
‘Mermaid Avenue’ is such a beautiful album, put together by Billy Bragg and Wilco using previously unheard lyrics from American folk singer, Woody Guthrie. This album makes me dream of swaying palm trees and gentle breezes somewhere far, far away.
Something about Stevie Nicks voice will always make me feel whimsical and inspired. Fleetwood Mac can make even the dullest bus ride seem beautiful.
What artists do you like to listen to while traveling? Any particular favorite songs?
